Should we or should we not have a bassinet in our bedroom? We are expecting our first daughter in April.
56Best for Baby
There are many reasons for having the baby in with you in your room:
- In the UK sleeping in the same room as your baby is recommended for at least the first six months to reduce the risk of cot death.
- You can keep an eye on them!
- They are comforted by your presence.
- You can regulate the temperature of the room
Best for you
There are also good reasons for you to share a room with your baby:
- You wont be running into their room every five minutes if they cough on the monitor!
- Feeding is less stressful and less disruptive at night.
- Nappy changing - ditto
- It is easier to comfort your child if you are not walking down the corridor to get to it.
- You can stop the crying quicker - a must if you have other children in the house.
- It creates a bond between parent and child.
- Men are more likely to hear a crying baby if it is in the same room!

tjmum, thanks for the response hub! Sorry I didn't see it until now...we were busy having a baby! yay!
We actually ARE having her in the same room as us for now simply because it's 100x easier to get up and feed her. I don't think it's spoiling her because she's so young, you know? We're slowly "breaking her in" to her regular bed so that once she's older it will be no problem for her to sleep there.
I see nothing wrong with keeping the baby with you for the first 3 months or so for many of the reasons listed above, especially when it's your first. Breaking them into the big crib little by little is OK for the last couple of weeks but I think they also need the enclosed feeling a bassinet gives to help make them feel safe.
I don't think you should put a baby in his own room - it's unnatural, and bad for both mother and child.
